We had wonderful "late lunch" service from a friendly young man (studying to be an architect) at about 3 PM on a random August Friday. Our 10 year old devoured her salmon nigiri (not well cut, sorry) and Shrimp Tempura roll as well as a good portion of my panko-crusted fish (what kind of fish? White fish? Flounder? Cod? Who knows, Who cares, it was delish.) and some gyoza (frozen? but good.). We enjoyed our lunch here immensely and would definitely return. A full bar with lots of flavors of Absolut vodka including Cilantro and Hibiscus. N.B. Many of the pricey "specialty" rolls are not worth it - just a sauced version of a standard maki . Skip those and get a "regular roll" and ask for sauce on the side if you must have sauce (or crunchies.) Oh - and Asian Sodas (Ramune) are $3.50 a pop. YOUCH!!!! (My kid is sooooooo spoiled.) Also - you can park for 2 hours free at the Hilton if you are dining here.

This place was an awesome find via Yelp. If you enjoy sushi you'll enjoy the fresh and creative dishes, excellent service and reasonable prices. The sashimi deluxe was well presented and fresh. My husband had the sushi deluxe which was ten pieces and a California roll which he enjoyed. We ordered Two bottles of sake at 15.00 each (not really a deal) but they complemented our dinner and of course a bottle of Sapporo. Overall a nice late lunch for us. Oh and the Miso really is excellent.

I'm torn between 2 and 3 stars here, the sushi wasn't terrible but nothing about it was particularly good either, both rolls I tried had too sweet of a sauce associated with them and lacked any real pazazz in the flavor or freshness departments. Considering this was the best rated sushi spot I saw in Virginia Beach I'm pretty shocked. I can only guess sushi isn't much of a thing in this area so the bar isn't quite as high as south Florida, California, NYC, or even Denver which has a great sushi scene.

I was in the area for training and decided to try here for lunch one day. The rolls I got were very good (California, spicy tuna). If I was in the area again, I would go back.

We stepped in after walking around the shops on our last day here in Virginia Beach! I tried the Calamari roll and my friend had two other rolls. The calamari roll was really big but good. I think it tasted a bit better without all the chili and avocado though. Our service was a bit slow but the sushi tasted really fresh!

First and foremost, the service is great! ( Ask for Aaron.) In addition to the service, try some outstanding house specialties. I highly recommend the Adkins roll: salmon, tuna , white tuna, and avocado. No rice! Super delicious AND totally paleo!! The fried soft shell crab is also a "not to be missed" dish. I personally dislike soft shelled crab; however, I ended up "sharing" two orders. Amazing. Other discoveries of the evening included using Ponzu sauce instead of the usual soy for dipping veggie rolls. (Ponzu + oshinko roll = bliss). The cuts and quality of the salmon are the best I've had in Virginia.

Yum! Came here based on a friends recommendation. Amazing! Fast and friendly service, our water glasses were kept topped off. And AMAZING food. Started off with their steamed dumplings which were very tasty and ordered a bunch of different sushi rolls - sorry I can't remember the names - but it was all amazing! We devoured the stuff. Very fairly priced as well. If you are a sushi fan you must stop by here.

One on my favorite sushi places in Virginia Beach. Must try the Charlie Brown roll! Friendly staff and original food. The menu is somewhat limited but still a must try.

We found this place via yelp and what a gem! As with most places this close to the beach, dining a little earlier in the evening avoids a lot of waiting. We had a wide next year's selection of rolls all were very tasty, the Charlie Brown roll was exceptional as advertised. We'll definitely be looking for this place on next year's visit

Another great experience. I've read over the somewhat recent reviews but they just do not describe my experience at all. We drove to the Beach for a random date night Friday night. Parking is a beech down there so we parked a block or so away. Not a big deal. It's a tourist area. This Soya along with the one in Great Bridge are my favorites. I ordered the King Neptune again. Very good. My husband ordered the chicken and steak hibachi. I did have to remind the server about the hibachi sauce that comes on the side. He happily fixed it and just noted there was a new chef in back. I also had the spicy salmon roll. Holy moly! Very spicy and very yummy. The shrimp tempura appetizer was great. I liked the tempura flake style this restaurant has. We were greeted quickly and seated quickly. A server took a couple minutes to show up but once he did and realized we had not be helped, he took great care of us. We will be back. :-)

Awesome sushi! Some of the best that I've ever had. I hope everyone has a chance to try this when they visit VA Beach.

By far one of my favorite places to get sushi in Virginia Beach. Service is fast and very friendly. They were quick in bringing out our orders and refilling our drinks which is always nice. I didn't feel like I waited hours for my food. Nice ambience and interior too - a great spot to go in the evening after hanging out at the beach all day. Free parking is available right next door up to two hours which is plenty of time and so convenient! We got the Sushi and Sashimi plate, 31 Ocean Roll, Volcano II, Atkins Roll, Spicy Salmon Roll and Hibachi steak. For appetizers we got shumai and gyoza. Sushi is fresh and portions are huge. 31 Ocean was my favorite roll - great for hamachi lovers like me! The jalapeños on the top gave it a nice crunch and perfect amount of heat without overpowering the fish. We didn't have any complaints with anything we ordered. Everything was amazing. I'll definitely go back. It's a little on the pricy side, but you get what you pay for.

The sushi here wasn't good at all. I ordered several different rolls and even the classics like spicy salmon roll and spicy tuna roll were bad. This is the first bad review I've ever given on yelp. I love sushi and was really looking forward to it on vacation at the beach. This place was very disappointing.

Ok, I absolutely love this place. Great food, made to order. Specialty rolls can be made, if you ask nicely.

Tonight was one of my most enjoyable dinners that I have ever had. We were tired and exhausted after a long day at the beach and being let down at one restaurant already that day. We sat down to one of the coolest looking fish tanks I have seen in a restaurant, with a black light on neon colored bottles and beautiful fish. My kids were very hungry, and with a 5 and 1 year old you could probably already imagine my frustration as a parent that already got turned away from one restaurant that was at its capacity. Our server Matthew (Matt) came over and greeted us very nicely and quickly took our drink order and I would later realize that i was recommend by Matt, the best food I would have later eaten He saw that my girls were very hungry so he quickly brought out or soup and salad, and some Edaemame as well. The Miso soup hit the spot, and the salad...well let's just say my wife enjoyed it so much she stole mine :). Then Came the best part, Teriyaki Ahí Tuna, Hibachi NY Strip Steak, and the Hibachi Chicken! All of these were melt in your mouth delecious! At most restaurants I am afraid that the Chef would over cook the meats and would come out tough. This was not that case at all, the Steak was Juicy and Tender, the Chicken was juicy and Flavorful, and the Ahí Tuna was perfectly cooked with an amazing taste. We also order Spicy Tuna with a modified request to make it crunch...mmmm so good a must try and the Snow Crab California rolls, which were also very delicious. Their mixed Tempura appatizer was the best I have ever had of course with a perfect crunch and flavor. I must have said so many amazing compliments to our server Matt, that the chef came out and I had the pleasure of thanking and speaking to him personally. I have eaten Japanese food all up and down the east coast and in Japan, and Soya takes the #1 spot that I have come across. Oh and I almost forgot their desert was amazing, we had one of each kind. First was the Green Tea Ice cream which had a great taste and my 1 year old tried to steal it all. Next came the Fried Ice cream which was so good, it had the perfect crunch and an amazing flavor on the inside. Lastly and definitely not the least was the fried Cheesecake...wow was this amazing, the flavor the texture...don't miss it. Matt was the most attentive and kind waiter that I have had the pleasure of having take care of us. It's the small things that sometimes people overlook that people don't realize how much more they can make people enjoy themselves on a night out, Matt did just that. So please if you visit listen to his suggestions they are great and don't forget to ask for Matt! PS those little candies by the door on your way out are awesome :) Weird note their Diet Coke is on point which is a always a big + for me ;-)

The Carli roll - has bacon in it. One of the best rolls I've ever had in my life. Generous portions and a bit spicy. Loved it. Glad I stopped in for lunch.

Good food. I had and enjoyed the shumi It is a childhood favorite from living in HI. I also had the tempura shrimp and vegetables. The vegetables were cooked correctly, but I don't like so many onions. The shrimp was oddly crunchy and the beading fell off?? The seating was limited (too small and tight) but the service was fast and friendly. Prices slightly above average but not terribly unreasonable.

I'm new to the area and found soya on yelp. I read a couple reviews and decided to go. The parking is horrid, but its worth the trip. The waiters that day were good eye candy and they had such great customer service. They made conversation amd immediately had my roll made to go. The sushi was delicious. I got a new mango roll they had just rolled out for the season and I was not disappointed. I could taste each bit of the roll and it was so filling. Really big pieces and the end piece should have been 2, but still totally great. I totally would recommend trying it. An awesome place to grab sushi on the oceanfront totally loved it.

I ate here three times in three days. What I discovered was that it was always good, but I had three different sushi chefs. One was a 5, one a 4 the other a 3. The three was really about texture, size of roll, didn't hold together.... The 5 was spot on - perfect and delicious. I think he was one of the owners. The green Clam -- Boom!! Atkins roll was a nice change of pace. The pace was nice and the servers attentive.

Soya is good spot for quick sushi while in Virginia Beach. I came for the lunch special. You get a miso soup, salad, California Roll, choice of meat, and an ice cream. I chose the shrimp tempura. The soup and salad were standard fare, the California Roll was tasty. The shrimp tempura was not what I was expecting. Before I go on I must apologize for my lack of fish knowledge. The shrimp was the curled variety, not the straight and long kind. Even though the shrimp was good, it made it difficult to eat. The ambience here is nice. It is a modern take with some hip elements. I imagine at night it can get packed here. Service was very friendly and patient while I made my selection. All in all a good place to go for some quick eats.

Great rolls and at a reasonable price. The VA Beach Roll was my favorite and they made a nice Rainbow Roll as well. Conveniently located near all of the big hotels.

Delicious! The sushi rolls have a good portion size, the food is carefully prepared. The 31 Ocean roll has jalapeños on top (spicy!) and the Atkins roll has ponzu sauce instead of shoyu as a complement, and it's a perfect fit. We also had the green mussels with dynamite sauce as an appetizer and it was delicious. The reason for 4 stars is that accommodations for big parties is limited, the only have 2 big tables. Other than that, food is delicious and you won't be disappointed

  • Roxane M.

Great sushi great staff! The fish is very fresh and the speciality rolls are to die for (my favorite is the Atkins). Hannah was a great helper when we we couldn't decide what to get. The restaurant atmosphere is modern and clean, ideally situated at the heart of the oceanfront and easy parking in the Hilton's garage. It wasn't our first time and won't be the last! Yum :)

Great little place for sushi. The wait staff was really sweet and the food was good. I had the hibachi grill shrimp. It was good, the shrimp was a little over cooked. My friend had sushi and said it was great!

Food was awesome. Service very friendly and upbeat. Maybe a little to upbeat as i like my privacy. Had the sashimi, nigiri, and hibachi scallops and shrimp. Sushi was amazing and the hibachi was very average. But honestly great vibe and great service that ties it into a wonderful find if say.

Awesome service and food. They have a tv over their sushi bar if you want to catch the game. Great miso soup and shrimp dumplings!!! We got 2 basic rolls and they were very good. We have also been to the same in richmond and it was great as well. Ended with green tea ice cream, so refreshing!

Had a nice takeout experience here last weekend while in town for my uncle's memorial. They are five mins from the HIlton and I needed a quick and healthy dinner- They did the trick with one roll (escaraole with cilantro, very fresh) and 3 orders each nigiri salmon and hamachi. Quality of fish was fresh, portions were generous. Total bill $43 before tip - these folks made a good meal, I'd go back- thank you!

  • Natalia M.

Too expensive for what it is. A simple menu with basically good tempura. Sushi is more expensive than a good place in Boston! (Which is an expensive city). Service is good even tho they gave us the worst look when we came in (the "owner" opened the door when saw us looking inside, we thought it was closed). A very "meh" experience. 50 bucks for 2 rolls, 1 appetizer and 1 entree (plus tip).

  • Wendy C.

Fast and friendly service. I think that their sauces need a little tweaking like the eel sauce is questionably gelatinous. The spicy mayo was good though. I would recommend the Charlie Brown roll. The dragon roll was underwhelming. They definitely have a good selection on their menu, just order smart.

my family and I went here during the Neptune festival and it wasn't busy at all. got the watermelon roll and the Neptune roll. the watermelon roll was a perfect mix of all my sushi faves...crab stick, eel sauce, avocado, & fresh delicious pink tuna. the rolls were huge compared to places in Chesapeake. we also ordered the gyoza which was really outstanding. the ponzu was so so good!! The decor is tasteful, modern, and understated. it's a pretty chill environment. The staff was very pleasant and accommodating and the restaurant was immaculately clean. it's located in a great spot next to a bunch of shops (shops on 31st/31 Ocean). there is a free parking garage for patrons of the shopping district. it's super convenient and has a door that comes out onto the main area right by Soya. delicious and convenient. score.

This is one of the best sushi restaurants in Virginia Beach. complementary parking is provided adjacent to the restaurant. The waitstaff and sushi masters are very friendly and efficient. The spivey tuna appetizer is the "bomb". Highly recommend for lunch or dinner. Bon appetite.

  • Cynthia T.

The service here is par. There seems to only be 1 waiter for lunch, so I am hoping that there would be more during dinner hours. The waiter also seemed to be the bartender as well. Being that there was only 1 waiter, the service was good, although it took a while before we were seated. Food wise, the different hibachi sauce was different from what I usually have and I didn't like it at all. The chicken teriyaki was pretty decent, but nothing great. Their fried rice needs more seasoning and the vegetable side was very sweet tangy and spicy (very Americanized). I can try their sushi next time I am in town, but not their rice entrees.

  • Nuno P.

The best sushi in Virginia Beach can be found right here. The place is smallish but relaxed and the service is attentive. I had lunch here several times this week and in my opinion you can't go wrong with the Chirashi - be warned its a good deal of food - while the sushi selection isn't stellar everything was very good in terms of presentation, taste and texture. The rice wasn't all that consistent through the 3 or 4 days I ate here, but it was never unpleasant, just sweeter mid week than it was during the weekend. If I could recommend anything at all: upgrade the chopsticks. People who love sushi care about details... Having untreated wood chopsticks that are this long make us feel we are at a Chinese restaurant. :)

Best Sushi IMO in VA BCH, don't worry about parking there is parking garage right next to it with free 2 hour parking. This is my #1 with Yama down off General Booth as coming in as #2. Groupons definitely help as it is a little expensive but well worth it. If you like a spicy hot roll try the Fireman, jalepeno on top of a spicy tuna roll you will love it, definitely my most favorite. Very friendly staff and the Ocean boardwalk is only a block away at 31st. ENJOY!

They have a great lunch special, 5 courses for $12 including soup, salad, California roll, choice of shrimp/fish/scallops, and sherbert. I got the scallops, I'm very picky with them but they were perfect! Service was quick and good, great value, free parking, 0overall great place.

My wife and I have been craving hawaiian ahi poke. It was absolutely great. But real hawaiian spicy ahi poke is prepared with mayo. But what was served was a hybrid spicy ahi poke, tasted great and prepared amazing. We had volcano II and a soya roll, tasted great but did not know it was cooked. It did not say that in the menu.

Came here on vacation while husband was home on R&R. The sashimi was very fresh and the rolls were delicious. My son LOVED Atkins roll. Husband really liked Volcano II and also loved the sake ;) Sushi is never cheap but the quality here was worth it. Elias, our server, was fantastic and very attentive!

Wow, this place was great. The servers were awesome, the food was exceptional. We ordered the hibachi chicken dinner for the kids and they split it up on two plates without even asking. The sushi recommendations weren't something I would have gone with but we were glad we did. This place is a gem and anyone in the mood for sushi, teriyaki, hibachi, or anything in that flavor should stop in and enjoy.

Yes, this place deserves 5 stars. Great and friendly service, excellent sushi, and a real cool environment. This place has turned into my go-to sushi spot in Virginia Beach. If you go, make sure you order the Watermelon roll- it's the best.

Overall not too bad an experience. I have been reluctant to try this place since its location tells me it is geared towards filling the gaping maws of hungry tourists who infest the oceanfront from Memorial Day until Labor Day. Just how hard is it to please someone who likely has low blood sugar, is wearing a fanny pack and caked in SPF 50? But anyway, its the middle of winter now which makes it a perfect opportunity to see what Soya could offer the home team. My wife ordered the spider roll, spicy tuna roll and the Virginia Beach roll. She liked all three of them and would be glad to eat them again. I tried a selection of their nigiri pieces and was impressed with the generous cuts of fish. The chef easily passed the drape test (both ends of the fish touching plate as it rests over the rice). However, I would have liked the fish to be a bit colder. The temperature by the time it reached our table was a bit above ideal. I know I should sit at the bar to receive optimal temps but my wife doesn't like doing that. She likes her leg room. A man has to make a domestic concession once in a while. Another positive note is that my wife was given a coupon (spend $50 and get $25 off) by a fellow worker as a Christmas gift. It said it was only valid Sunday through Thursday but the staff took the coupon without question even though it was a Friday night. Bonus points for flexibility. (BTW...Don't forget to tip on the full amount when using one of these coupons!!!) Now, here are the downchecks. No cocktails menu. If they have one they did not offer it to us. I am always on the lookout for an innovative martini. But alas, no luck last night. Also, I ordered a half dozen oysters on the halfshell and was told they were out for the rest of the year. Huh? Its the middle of oyster season. If you can't keep them stocked then take it off your menu. But all in all, I liked it. I would gladly come back.

Nothing to say about this place at all. I thought I was going to get some good sushi based on the previous reviews. Arrived to the location and walked in after 5 min we were barely greeted by the waiter/hostess. I was then told that the wait would be no more than 5 min for a party of four. We stood there and waited and waited and waited and waited and after about 15 min of waiting we eventually left due to the lack of customer service. He just never returned to keep us notified on the wait time. Not to mention there were a few empty tables and empty bar stools we would've gladly sat at. How rude to treat an Elite...

Service was great, friendly, not quick though. However, if you are not on a hurry, the ambience is great. The food wasn't all that. The yakisoba was kind of sour and the habatchi chicken was dried n tasted weird. Three star is for the service and ambience... food would only be 2 stars.

Soya is a nice place to have a quick lunch of sashimi and sushi, along with a glass of wine. Conveniently located across the street from the Hilton Oceanfront, it is of much higher quality than I expected. On my visit, I particularly enjoyed the freshness of the tuna and salmon, and the yellowtail roll had great flavor. Service was friendly and efficient, and gluten free soy sauce is available on request. If you like fish, you'll love watching the neon-green and bright blue fish swimming in several large tanks throughout the restaurant.

When I entered the almost empty restaurant, I was ignored by the waitress for a good 10 minutes. Not willing to solely base my experience on the shoddy greeting, I sat down and ordered off the sushi menu. The waitress continued to ignore me for a good while until I was able to flag her down to ask her a question. My question to her was: "How many pieces of sashimi do you get in one order?" Her reply was to roll her eyes and say "Do you even KNOW what sashimi is?". Now I wasn't going to get in it with her, but since I had lived in Japan for about 3 years I was definitely certain of I was ordering. I ordered my salmon sashimi and catepillar roll and finished (the food was alright, I will give them that). But as soon as I was done with my order, the waitress looked at me and snottily said "You're not going to eat more?". Normally this wouldn't bother me, but I had picked up that it was a jab at my weight. I left the restaurant after I paid and I don't recommend this to anyone.

Very tasty sushi and hibachi. The only thing is, they don't give you enough chicken and just a bunch of onions for a $22 hibachi. The sushi itself is very good, but too much sauce on top, making the sushi a little salty.

    (4)
  • James T.

Great service. We had two kids 5,2 who shared a chix hibachi for $15 which was great. We had all sushi, good size nigiri, average price. Made to order, limited cold sake menu, only 3 options. They have a liquor bar. Decent amount if roll options. Watermelon roll was great, Atkins ok. White tuna, eel, salmon and yellowtail nigiri were great.

We came in here this week for our annual sushi dinner on our anniversary. The service was the best we have had, but when the waiter was, more than 10 feet from the table he would talk loudly to the other worker about random topics, and it was pretty distracting and definitely took away from the nice meal. Soya has a good selection of some pretty cool, original rolls. We enjoyed the tootsie roll and their house roll, along with some veggie tempura, seaweed salad and soup.

I am SHOCKED the reviews for this place are so low! We came here because of a Groupon, but we might be making this our new sushi spot! It was fantastic! We came on a Saturday night, were seated quickly, and had a wonderful meal! Our server was very friendly and made great recommendations. We and the Sushi & Sashimi platter, Volcano II, and Virginia Beach Crunch. All of the above was fantastic! I hate coming down to the Oceanfront during tourist season, but this place would be worth the trip!

  • Clown Duck D.

Most of the rolls on the menu were cooked so I was a bit leery of ordering a rainbow roll but it was big and really surprisingly good! No complaints about the service, it was fine. The rice oddly was a little warm, I guess it had just been made. That threw me off a little, but not enough to keep me away if I get another sushi craving before we leave town.

A very nice treat! On a short trip to VA Beach with my family we had a nice sit down lunch here. I had the vegetable yakisoba and a Kamikaze Roll (spicy tuna). Very delicious and I was more than filled and satisfied for around 15 dollars. Great little place, highly recommend it.

Nice place just off the beachwalk, good selection of specialty rolls and the standard offering. Somewhat pricey in reference to the roll size, but good flavor and quality.

  • Frank M.

Right off the bat the waitress seemed annoyed we were with children. But other than that the lunch special was cheap but the food was not. It was like a small 4 course meal of a sushi roll, some choice of seafood related friend type business, a salad, and soup. The whole family just got their orders and threw them in the middle of the table and we all pigged out. I was there off the popular season so the place was pretty empty. I have no huge qualms other than the waitress honestly. Good location for the touristy types and any beach goers with a price to match even the frugal spenders. Not me though, I BALL OUT and make it RAIN!

Awesome sushi! My friends and I were only in town for two nights and ate dinner here both nights. The VA Beach Crunch roll and Volcano II roll were my favorites. Very fresh and super yummy. Service was just ok, not great. We were seated quickly both nights though, which was nice. Would definitely eat here again if we're ever back in the area.

Went to this place with my girlfriend after finding it on Yelp. We are always in the mood for some good sushi and Asian cuisine and this place was one of the best around where we were. When we went in we were immediately greeted by a very pleasant lady, who sat us quickly and then we were greeted again by a very energetic and nice man who would be our waiter. We both just ordered water, so I can't say much about their drink choice. But the menu was full and had some great options. We decided to get th Volcano Roll and each get an entree. She got the hibachi chicken, and I got the seafood special (noodles, veggies, shrimp, and scallops). When the Volcano roll came we were pleasantly surprised by how much there was for only $10. It was very good and it had a very unique twist to it; something you have to see to understand. I definitely recommend this sushi roll to anything trying out the sushi. The entrees came out and again we were happy with our portions. The Seafood Noodles came with about 8-12 shrimp and the maybe 6-8 good sized scallops. I put some soy sauce on it and went to town. It was very good and I would definitely get this again. My girlfriends hibachi chicken was very good as well. Came with veggies, rice, chicken, and of course, yum yum sauce. I snagged some of hers and can definitely say it was very tasty. The best things about this place were definitely price: which was very good for what you get. Taste: all of the food was amazing and well flavored, some of the best I've had. Quantity: you get a lot for what you'll pay just about anywhere. Variety: enough options for anyone, whether or not you're eating sushi or not. Next time I am in VA beach I will definitely be going back to Soya and so should you.

Not once did any of the staff introduce themselves so I resolved to calling the waitress miss and the guy who helped her dude. The place was empty when I arrived which was a red flag for me. It's June and no customers?? The food was ok, nothing outstanding.

Funny, helpful waiter, and pretty good prices for sushi. Portions were generous and everything tasted really fresh. The decor is a little odd (a Harley sits at the entrance, no lie), but I guess there's nothing wrong with quirky if the food is good!

The sushi was just ok in taste. Very plentiful though. I wouldn't go back again.

During vacation this was the easiest place to walk to to satiate a sushi craving. The sushi was pretty good, nothing mind blowing but definitely hit the spot. The restaurant was tiny and cozy. It was a fairly affordable option for sushi just off the boardwalk.

Went here for dinner, being close to our hotel. Everything we ordered was good. Was a Sunday night so semi-crowded, but there was no wait. Customer service was a little slow, but understandable given there was only one server for the whole place. I ordered the sashimi app. as my meal, and also tasted some of the other's fried rolls, which were also good. Would return again if I'm in VA Beach.

With a hankering for seafood of some sort because we were at a beach, my friends and I settled for this sushi bar right near our parking spot. When we walked in, we noticed how fitting the decor was and that it had a nice ambiance to it. The food ended up being a little bit pricier than we thought but the justification was that we were at a tourist trap of a city and were having sushi. There were other things on the menu besides sushi but I personally figured that I went to a sushi bar to have sushi, not other things. The problem I had with this meal overall was that I had sore in my mouth right behind my front teeth so eating everything, especially sushi in one bite, was quite painful. However, the ginger was good and the wasabi potent. Good restaurant but not mindblowing. My friend ordered the chicken hibachi entree which came with soup and salad. She didn't really want the salad so I took it and it was fairly decent. The greens were actually fresh and the combination of which vegetables they picked worked well together. It was drizzled in a ginger sesame dressing that had a good amount of tang to it. I first had Unagi which is freshwater eel for those of you unfamiliar with it. Apologies for my picture being so bright but the restaurant had dim lighting and all I shoot with is a point-and-shoot so flash was needed. It was a generous chunk of eel with the right amount of sauce over it. Not as bony as others that I've had, the eel was cooked well and the rice a fitting size. I had my friend try some even though he doesn't like fish or seafood in general and he actually approved! Next was their Hamachi roll which is Japanese amberjack/yellowtail. My favorite! The roll had cucumber, scallions, and small roe. It was refreshing and nice. The rice was a little too much (it was a rather tall roll) and hid the texture of the fish somewhat but overall, a good roll. My second roll was their Golden Scallop roll which consisted of baked scallops on top (complete with with smothered in Japanese mayo) and spicy tuna on the bottom. It looked a bit overwhelming because the topping was overflowing on the big pieces of the roll. I liked this one a lot because the spicy tuna had just enough kick to complement the mayo-y scallops. It was a heavy roll though, and I had a hard time getting through all the pieces. Perhaps they should let up on the mayo next time!

I picked up a California roll and a tuna roll for about $10. This was my second visit to this place. They have a very friendly staff. Ok, parking sucks, but It's Virginia Beach Oceanfront, what do you expect - besides I was on my bicycle (ha!). It is easy to find, not crowded - but i was there 7 ish on a Wednesday evening (and a beatuful evening at that!).

Great location and never really crowded, this is a wonderful place to grab some sushi in Va Bch! I highly recommend it. The staff is great, and the one of the owners always seems to be in the house, so complaints (never had any) are dealt with quickly. I come to Va Bch every year and always make it in to eat at least once (usually twice). the ingredients are always fresh and the service quick. You have to, have to, have to try the Virginia Beach crunch Roll.

Went there on a quiet Tuesday night - ate at the bar. Great ambiance Friendly and helpful staff and owners Good Miso soup and interesting salad dressing. The sushi was excellent - fresh rice, generous rolls, and the eel was delicious! The Soya Dragon and New York roll were spot on. Would definitely go again! And again.

Was here during the weekend before Sandy hit -- very quiet at 5pm. I picked up a udon soup noodles were chewy, absolute yummyness and nice after a cold day. The tempura shrimp were crisp and very lightly battered -- great.

I tried this place when I visited here for a conference. I had the grilled salmon steak which was pretty good. I didn't feel like trying sushi at the time since I was traveling. I have a thing against sushi when traveling since my ER experience in Taiwan the night before my flight back home. Well, this place pretty good and would recommend it to anyone who wanted to play it safe like me.

I hate to do this, but it's shocking how downhill this place has gone. Back in the day (like 2009-2011) this was my favorite sushi place in town. I just moved back to the area and have been twice and was super disappointed both times. Most recently, was last Thursday. Once seated, it took another 10 minutes for anyone to take our drink order. We had the shrimp tempura appetizer which was pretty flavorless. We ordered two Golden Scallop rolls (which is what I order every time I've ever been and used to love so much). This time, tons of imitation crab meat was mixed with the scallops on top of the roll. It was disgusting, I couldn't taste scallops AT ALL. To top off the experience, the ladies room was out of toilet paper and I advised the older lady hostess, who decided to ignore me and make a personal phone call instead. It wasn't refilled for the remainder of the time in the restaurant (which was like 30 more minutes). Save yourself some money and time and go somewhere else!

My husband was not impressed with this place. Parking is a nightmare. The food was okay, the yellow tail sushimi you could tell it was not fresh, he refused to eat it. Our waiter was okay, a little too flirty and arrogant for my husband's liking. Probably won't be going here again.

Dinner at Soya was disappointment. Sushi rolls were small. Supermarket's rolls are much better. Soft shell crabs were incredibly tiny. It was not worth the money. Most items on the menu were overpriced. I would NOT go back even with gift certificate from restaurant.com . ( restaurant.com/microsite… )

CliffsNotes: It's easy to dismiss Soya given its grumpy female owner, off-the-path location, and prototypical menu. Nonetheless, the food is surprisingly is surprisingly fresh and the portions quite generous. The volcano rolls are unique here with its sweet and spicy sauce and use of tempura flakes. The chirashi includes multiple fish species instead of the typical selection of tuna, salmon, and snapper. Soya is one example of a restaurant where you can't judge a restaurant by its outward appearance. [Original Visit: September 4, 2010]

My favorite sushi joint. I swear every time I go in there, they remember who I am and I almost always sit at the same table. The decor is very fitting - it's right on the strip at the oceanfront so there are lots of fish tanks and the whole place is quite blue. The owner used to have his motorcycle on display, but I haven't seen in a while. Oh, and the bathroom is soo neat. Everything is operated by a sensor. Even the trashcan. Anyway, onto the food - I've had their Shumai, Gyoza, Yakitori, Shrimp Tempura, Negimaki, Beef Tataki appetizers. All flavored and cooked well. I always get their house salad because, though I will never know for certain, I don't think they preset them and the dressing is just on point. A lot of sushi places I've been to have inedible salad due to their "homemade" dressing. As far as sushi goes, I've had their Cali, Crunchy Cali, Dragon, Philly, and Seattle rolls. Yes, I only eat cooked sushi.. for now. I've also had their Chicken Katsu & Steak and Scallops hibachi. YUMMM. I love coming here. I've celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, girls' night out, and reunions here. You should definitely come in for a roll or two next time you're at the strip.

For a few years we have been visited this place when we stayed on the boardwalk hotels. First couple of visits were great in point of quality of the food, service and value (we were using restaurant.com GCs). Since they left restaurant.com the value worsened a lot which wouldn't be that important if the quality of the food stayed the same. But our last visit we payed high prices for mediocre at best meal and so-so service. They decreased the amount of fresh fish in the rolls, increased the amount of absolutely tasteless rice, and even went cheating on the customers presenting God only knows what kind of cooked stuffing for a spicy tuna in their GOLDEN SCALLOP roll. Just to make it short I'll say that the highlight of the meal was the seaweed salad out of 3 "house specialty rolls", miso soup (the worst we had ever), dessert and drink for what we paid $72 (lunch for two). This was definitely our last visit to this place and we can't recommend it to anybody unless paying more for tasteless food is your thing.

LOCATION: North Beach area across from Hilton Hotel in a shopping complex/parking deck called the Shoppes at 31 Ocean, which is also across the street from Catch 31 Fish House and Bar that is the Hilton restaurant and Neptune Park. Very close to the ocean front - about a block. ATMOSPHERE: Verrrry clean, chic. Nice modern decor - simple but stylish. Bathrooms VERY clean. Love the sink. A bar area, seperate sushi bar area, flat screens, seating that allowed for privacy (meaning in separated areas in 1 space instead of 1 large open space with tables). Dimly lit. Would be good for groups, a date, or casual outing. FOOD: We ordered: 1. Lunch special with scallop - Lunch special valid until 6pm daily with salad, miso soup, meat dish (choice of shrimp or scallops - 4 pieces or fish), california roll (5 pieces) and dessert (green tea ice cream. Yum!) all for only $10. All were very good and this was filling with a lot of variety. A little bit of everything basically. Scallops were seared and cooked nicely. PRICES: Reasonably priced especially using restaurant.com certificate (spend $35 and get $25 off). For 2 lunch specials and a teriyaki chicken plate was a total of $15 with our certificate! SERVICE: Our waiter was very attentive, prompt and polite young man. He took a picture of us when we asked. A lady who looked like the owner spoke Korean. PARKING: We didn't park here but there is parking on the other side of the complex and it looks like they validate parking as it says "free parking for patrons." Not sure though as Soya staff did not mention this to us. CONCLUSION: I would come here again and recommend a try. Food is good and atmosphere is on par fitting for many different occasions. A lot of VA Beach especially near 20th St area is trashy, dirty, and tacky. Great to have a chic, good quality restaurant like Soya in the area.

By far the best place to eat in VA beach's crap-tastic food scene. Freshness and good service; a rare find, even in the hotel restaurants. This review is my thank you. what I had: Sashmi: Uni- as funky and good as urchin gets Tuna Lover- three great cuts of tuna Katsuo- my first bonito; very good Tako- octopus; not the best I've ever had, but good Rolls: Watermelon- Spicy tuna and eel wrapped with tuna and avocado on top; Amazing!! California- It was a California roll.

I ordered some sushi to go today and I had a great experience. The workers were very friendly. The sushi was very fresh and the sushi chef made the slight changes to the rolls that I requested. I ordered a Dragon Roll, Philadelphia Roll, and a Lion King roll. I will return next time I'm in Virginia Beach to try dinner.

One of the better places to get sushi in VB. Its hard to explain but their sushi just tasted fresher, while most places have average "mall" sushi, you can really tell the difference at Soya. We went in the evening for dinner and it had a very intimate setting, better for couples or dates. We had my daughter with us and while that was fine, we felt kind of out place amongst the couples in a dimly lit setting :P Also, the service did take quite a bit, so go when you have a lot of time or make sure you bring an interesting date ;)

The food here was really good. Everything tasted fresh and well seasoned. We had the negimaki, salmon rolls, shumai, and yakisoba. I had nothing to complain about the food. But the service was absolutely ridiculous, figure out somewhere else to go if you are really hungry. It took nearly an hour and half just to get appetizers. The waiter claimed that it was their first busy night of the year. I don't care, as a restaurant they should really get their stuff together busy or not. The service is the only reason why i will not be returning.

Best. Sushi. Ever. Great place - the fish is fresh, the sushi and nigiri portions are large, and the food is prepared at just the right temperatures. It's not cheap, but given the quality, you still get value. I will go back every time I go to VAB. (try the watermelon roll - it's truly fantastic)

The hotel concierge recommended Soya and I was pleasantly surprised. The Tempura Spicy Tuna Roll is excellent. I'm planning on having another one before I have to leave town (or at least order one on the way to the airport).

I am not certain if it was an off night, but there were only two servers working the evening we ate here. We were sitting next to another couple who was clearly aggitated as well. We were unable to make any eye contact with any wait staff. After over 40 minutes of waiting for food (and no one checking on a refill), the other couple left. We waited it out. My boyfriend isn't a sushi person so he ordered teriyaki chicken. His meal came 15 minutes before mine so I sat there staring a him eat. My two orders of sushi came. They were fresh and tasty but at that point, I was so hungry and irritated that everything was so off cue. It was busy, but definitely the strip's tourists crowds had already left and there really wasn't an excuse for the poor service.

We went to this Sushi restaurant tonight, which is in the Shoppes @ 31 Ocean. The service was friendly, and the food was good. We had two standout items, a delicious baked salmon roll with a teriyaki-type glaze, and a yummy "Volcano" roll, which was crunchy and fried. The other sushi rolls we had -- spicy tuna, kappa, Philadelphia and shrimp tempura -- were fine, but not better than sushi we'd had before. The only miss was the shumai, which had too much of a fishy flavor and too thin of a sauce.

The boyfriend and I decided to go on a date while we were in Virginia Beach and we was in the mood for some sushi! A concierge at our hotel recommended this place for us because it was very close to our hotel. We were there on a Thursday which wasn't too busy. When we first walked in the waiter was already complimenting/hitting on my bf! It was hilarious. He sat us down and we ordered right away. The food came out within 10 minutes and we finished our meal within 20! Our date lasted for only half an hour! Overall service was great and the sushi is bangin! I will def. go back if and when I do get a chance to go back to VA. I def. recommend ordering the Crunching Tiger/King Neptune Roll/and the Volcano!

It's always good to give sushi on the east coast a try (in this case Virginia)- soya has a low tempo and somewhat dimly lit environment-the chef (maybe filiino?) seems creative in his approach and I can give a positive review I'm the context of this remote outpost from traditional sushi cities

A bit expensive, service was not great, but sushi, rolls etc that we had were great. No issues with freshness and taste. I would go again in a heartbeat.
